Application Process

The first step to applying to a Finnish university or university of applied sciences is to identify the program that best matches your academic background and career goals. Most applications are submitted online through the national application portal, Studyinfo.fi, or directly through the university’s website. Once you have shortlisted your preferred institutions, visit their websites to review program details, admission requirements, tuition fees, scholarship opportunities, and application deadlines.

Finland generally offers two application routes: the Joint Application system and Separate Applications. Through the Joint Application system, students can apply to multiple programs with a single application during designated application periods. Separate Applications are conducted directly by universities for specific programs and may have different deadlines and requirements.

Following are the commonly required documents:

  • Educational Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Academic Transcripts and Degree Certificates
  • Statement of Purpose / Motivation Letter
  • Letters of Recommendation (if required)
  • English Language Proficiency Test Scores (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, etc.)
  • Copy of Passport (first and last pages)
  • Passport-size Photographs
  • Work Experience Certificates (if applicable)
  • Any Additional Qualification Certificates or Extracurricular Achievement Certificates

Students are advised to begin the application process at least 8–12 months before the intended intake. Most universities have intake periods in Autumn (August/September), while some programs also offer Spring (January) admissions. Admission decisions are based on academic qualifications, language proficiency, motivation, entrance examinations, interviews, portfolios, or other program-specific criteria.

After receiving an admission offer, students must accept the offer, arrange tuition fee payment (if applicable), and apply for a Finnish Residence Permit for studies. Applicants must also provide proof of sufficient financial resources and valid health insurance as part of the residence permit process.
