HOW ARE BANDS CALCULATED?
The IELTS preparation test uses a band scale from 0 to 9 to report an overall band score and individual band scores for each section (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The band scale is divided into half-bands (e.g., 6.5, 7.0, 7.5), and each band corresponds to a level of English proficiency.
The calculation of the band score involves averaging the individual scores obtained in four sections. For instance, if a student achieves scores of 7.0 in listening, 7.5 in reading, 6.5 in writing, and 7.0 in speaking, they calculate their overall band score by adding these scores and dividing the sum by 4: (7.0 + 7.5 + 6.5 + 7.0) / 4 = 7.0. Afterward, the final score is rounded to the nearest whole number.
For instance, if a person scores 6.1, the system will round the band off to 6.0. Similarly, if an individual scores 6.35, the system will round the band off to 6.5.
Each section secures individual bands which are later averaged for the final band score. To know the exact band description and band score according to the number of correct answers, visit the IELTS official website.
HOW TO GET THE MAXIMUM SCORE IN EACH SECTION?
Each section is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9, with a band score of 9 indicating a high level of proficiency. Achieving a high score in each section requires dedicated preparation, practice, and strategy. Here are some tips to help you score maximum in each section of your IELTS exam:
- LISTENING SECTION
To score high in the listening section, you need to practice active listening as you have to listen to a variety of audio recordings, including conversations, monologues, and lectures in your main IELTS preparation exam, decipher them, and answer simultaneously. This means paying close attention to the audio and taking notes as you listen. You should also familiarize yourself with common English accents and use practice materials that simulate the actual test conditions.
Also, learned time management. The listening section provides time to read the questions before listening to the audio. Use this time to read the questions carefully and underline the keywords. This will help you stay focused during the audio recording and improve your accuracy. At the end, make sure to check your answers as any grammatical error can cost you marks.
- READING SECTION
Improve your vocabulary through your daily routine by making a habit of reading English language materials such as newspapers, books, and academic journals. You can also watch more English shows, series and movies.
During the exam, to maximize your score, skim through the text to get a general idea of the content and then scan the text for specific information related to the questions. Pay attention to keywords and try to find relevant information. Try to spend no more than 20 minutes on each part and prioritize the questions that carry more marks.
- WRITING SECTION
Practice writing regularly and get feedback from a teacher or tutor. During the exams, follow the instructions. The writing section has specific instructions for each task. Make sure you read the instructions carefully and understand them. This will help you avoid losing marks for not following the instructions. The essay task requires you to write a coherent and well-structured essay. Plan your essay by brainstorming ideas, creating an outline, and organizing your thoughts logically. You can improve your essay by adding examples, they create a strong impact.
- SPEAKING SECTION
As the speaking section requires fluency and accuracy in English, practice speaking and record your voice to know where you lack or fumble.
